The Porsche Rumor That Points to a Flat-8 Hypercar

A half-million-euro Porsche with an engine the brand has never sold is a wild thing to imagine. Yet that is exactly what recent chatter describes, and Porsche’s own calendar gives the whispers a date to watch.

    • A rumored hypercar, said to be codenamed S1, could be previewed at Porsche’s Capital Markets Day on October 7.
    • The talked-about engine is a flat-8, a layout Porsche has built and tested but never put in a road car.
    • Nothing is confirmed by Porsche, so treat the price, the name, and the reveal timing as speculation for now.

    What the Rumor Actually Claims

German business paper Handelsblatt kicked this off, and other outlets picked it up fast. The gist is that Porsche might use its October 7 Capital Markets Day to preview a low-volume hypercar aimed well above the 911. The rumored price sits around 500,000 euros, or roughly $569,000 at recent exchange rates. Internally, people are calling it S1.

Here is the honest caveat. Porsche has not confirmed the car, the name, or the reveal, and even Handelsblatt stops short of certainty about whether the eight-cylinder machine is real. So read all of this as informed rumor rather than fact. What gives it some weight is the business logic. CEO Michael Leiters reportedly wants to push Porsche into higher-margin territory, and a rare, expensive halo car fits that idea better than another spin-off of an existing model.

The Flat-8 Is the Real Headline

The engine is the part that makes enthusiasts sit up. Porsche has never sold a flat-8 in a production car, though it has plenty of history with the layout. The brand built its first eight-cylinder boxer back in 1962 and dropped it into a Formula 1 car, then spent decades using variations in hill-climb specials and endurance racers without ever offering one to buyers.

More recently, in 2023, e-fuels figure Marcos Marques described a prototype that ran a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter flat-8. It was quoted at 750 horsepower, a number Marques called badly understated, along with 738 pound-feet of torque, or 1,000 Newton-meters. That engine went into a Cayman-based test car paired with a manual gearbox. The project never moved forward. According to Marques, leadership at the time was locked onto aggressive electrification rather than cars built purely to thrill.

Why the Timing Feels Different Now

A lot has shifted since then. Porsche is working to shore up profitability and lean harder into its sports car identity. That backdrop follows real financial strain, including a $6.9 billion write-down that parent Volkswagen took on its stake. In that light, reviving a parked idea and wrapping it in a passion project starts to make sense as a statement piece.

Remember the Mission X from 2023? Porsche showed it as an electric hypercar and floated it as a possible successor to the 918 Spyder, but only ever called it a design study with no green light for production. A flat-8 S1 would be a very different animal from that all-electric concept and from the plug-in hybrid 918. It would lean analog and exotic, closer in spirit to the Carrera GT, whose naturally aspirated V10 came from an abandoned F1 program that Porsche later revived for a shelved Le Mans racer.

    A Curious Coincidence at Goodwood

If the flat-8 does happen, it would not be alone in the world. RUF showed its own version at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. The B8 is an in-house engine making more than 1,000 horsepower, fitted here to a stretched CTR3 development mule modified to swallow the long, wide powertrain. It runs a six-speed transmission, and RUF frames it as a testbed for a future model. Given the timing, that overlap is hard to ignore, even if RUF developed the B8 entirely on its own.

Mark October 7 on the Calendar

For now, the smart move is patience. The S1 could be a genuine preview of Porsche’s next flagship, or it could be enthusiast wishful thinking that fades by winter. Capital Markets Day on October 7 is the moment to watch, since that is where any real hint would surface. Keep your expectations loose and your excitement ready, because a flat-8 Porsche road car would be worth the wait.
