Toyota FT-Se: A Sleek New Age for Electric Sports Cars
Are we finally entering a world in which electric sports cars will look like we thought they might? The Toyota FT-Se could have the expected EV style.
Electric sports cars aren’t a brand-new concept in the market, but an electric Toyota sports car is. Toyota has been one of the last brands to enter the EV world, and it continues to hold back and avoid adding fully electric models to the mix. A new low-slung electric sports car from Toyota will debut at the Tokyo auto show, giving us a glimpse at what could be possible in the EV world.
Nothing but teasers
The new FT-Se isn’t the only new electric Toyota heading to the auto show. The other is an electric SUV called the FT-3e. So far, we only have teaser images of these vehicles that will be at the show later this month. The teaser image of the FT-Se shows a low-slung car with an aggressive stance featuring wide front and rear tracks and sharp-looking taillights. The taillights finish in fins that appear to aid the aero package of this new car. The GR logo is all you need to know to expect something special out of a car with some Gazoo Racing influence.
Looking inside, the dashboard has several different display screens, and the steering wheel brings the yoke-style controllers we’ve seen in the Lexus RZ.
Power is a mystery
Toyota offers absolutely no information regarding the power system of the FT-Se. The only hint given is that this new sport car could share many components with other new concept cars that will debut soon. The shared components might be with the FT-Se and FT-3e, which could signal that Toyota is ready to share information regarding a new EV platform that could serve as the underpinnings for EVs from now until solid-state batteries arrive.
What do we know of the FT-3e?
Toyota is being so tight-lipped that we know just as much about the FT-3e as we do the FT-Se. From teaser images, we can see that this new electric SUV is about the same size as the current Toyota electric SUV, the bZ4X. Could this new model be the replacement for the bZ4X, adding a compact electric SUV to the new EV platform to give us an EV that could serve as the next-generation model for this vehicle class?
Both of the new concept electric vehicles will appear at the Toyota auto show later this month.
What does the Toyota bZ4X bring to the table?
The 2023 Toyota bZ4x is the only electric vehicle in the Toyota lineup in North America. This electric-powered SUV is a solid choice with a polarizing style and a host of qualities that make it a great option in the electric SUV market. This EV provides up to 252 miles of driving range in a growing EV SUV category. Unfortunately, that driving range isn’t enough to put this electric Toyota ahead of the rest of the market.
A pair of choices for the bZ4X
The current Toyota electric SUV is offered in XLE and Limited trims, both of which can be had with either a single-motor FWD setup or dual-motor AWD configuration. Some of the standard equipment for this electric SUV includes:
- A panoramic glass roof
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane-departure warning
- Lane-keeping assist
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Rear cross-traffic alerts
- Safe Exit Assist
Moving to the Limited trim, you’ll add some cool features, including:
- A motion-activated power liftgate
- A heated steering wheel
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- A multi-view camera
- 20-inch wheels
- Softex faux-leather upholstery
How much power does this Toyota electric SUV offer?
The FWD, single motor versions of this Toyota SUV, provides 201 horsepower to the wheels. Moving up to the AWD version with two motors only increases the horsepower to 215 ponies. This isn’t the increase expected when you move up to a dual-motor layout. Hopefully, the new FT-Se and FT-3e models will provide more significant power increases when changing from single-motor to dual-motor systems.
Will the new Toyota FT-Se show us what the future of Toyota electric sports car driving could be? Is this the start of the new platform with the upgraded Toyota battery packs? Two new Toyota electric vehicles head to the Tokyo auto show later this month, where we will finally learn more about these two EVs. The new FT-3e could be a fitting replacement for the underpowered bZ4X, but the FT-Se is an all-new model that has no predecessor. Will the Toyota FT-Se be a hit right out of the gate?
