Does Ferrari have plans to make an EV? It seems so, and the new prancing horse brand’s EV should arrive before the end of 2025.

When it comes to electric cars, Ferrari, like many other automakers, will be entering new territory. Of course, the brand only recently embraced the need to have an SUV in the market, and that has been a huge hit. If you’ve been wowed by the incredible V12-powered Ferrari Purosangue, you might find that an EV from this brand can also be exciting. Of course, we won’t know until this new electric vehicle hits the market, and we won’t receive any details about it until Ferrari is ready to give us information.

Doing it the right way

Whether it’s posturing or actually the right way to do things, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna claims the company will produce electric cars in the right way. While that leaves a lot to interpretation, it should hopefully mean Ferrari will compete with Porsche and Tesla at the top of the EV performance market. Considering the customers this brand typically caters to, this new EV should be a car that’s made to be a lot of fun and drive with incredible speed and power.

Is Ferrari already testing a car?

Recently, a Ferrari EV prototype was spotted on the roads. This car is comical at best. It wears the Purosangue bodywork with the black and white swirled camouflage covering the body panels. Along with this swirled look, it appears designers and engineers have added blue painter’s tape on many seams and areas of the body. We’re not sure what the blue tape indicates, but it could be areas the team is working on to improve this car.

In addition to the covered body, this electric vehicle has a set of fake exhaust tips, completing the comical appearance of a car that drives using an electric powertrain and will never need exhaust pipes.

This testing car has already been driving a lot with several thousand kilometers of testing under its belt.

Will Ferrari clients want an EV?

Ferrari cars are known to be sporty, stylish, powerful, and fun to drive. If you take away the engine sound, some of the fun is gone. Ferrari engineers are aware of this issue and insist this new electric vehicle will have the desired sounds that clients want when they drive. Most Ferrari owners don’t buy these cars for one thing but for the many qualities that come with every Ferrari.

The new electric models should have unique sound signatures, but nobody from the company has elaborated on what that will be. In 2023, Ferrari patented an exhaust note, which could be the sound used in the new models when they go electric.

Will we lose combustion models?

Considering the new V12-powered Purosangue has only been in the market for a couple of years, we shouldn’t worry that Ferrari will turn its back on gas-powered cars and SUVs anytime soon. Customers still looking for pure Ferrari power and performance will find it and get to enjoy it.

With that in mind, this brand is transitioning and will offer gas, hybrid, and electric models going forward. That said, the brand doesn’t intend to report sales based on powertrains; instead, it will report them based on the models sold.

Where will the new EV be built?

The first Ferrari EV will be built at the new E-building, which is part of the Maranello campus. This massive building should feature cutting-edge technology and a full electric platform to create the first model from this brand to ever use an all-electric powertrain. A new electric model requires new technologies, components, and processes, which this team wants to handle and create. This should mean everything included in this new electric car will be pure Ferrari.

Ferrari hasn’t shied away from innovation

Some might think of the prancing horse brand as being stubborn and unwavering, but that’s not the case. Although Ferrari was one of the last brands to embrace and build SUVs, it also is one of the first brands to adopt the KERS which was part of the 2009 Formula 1 season. This system was introduced in the hybrid LaFerrari in 2013 and has come to the PHEV SF90 Stradale.

The new Ferrari EV could easily be priced around $500,000, which wouldn’t be a challenge for many Ferrari customers. Certainly, when this new electric sports car appears, there will be many clamoring to be among the first to purchase this new electric car with their favorite supercar brand on the hood.
