Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid: Big Power, Lightweight Battery

A unique turbo system
The new eTurbo of this Porsche doesn’t have a blow-off valve. The battery spins the eTurbo at up to 120,000 rpm, and the pressure turns it into a generator that sends pressure back to either the e-motor or the battery. This means the hybrid 911 makes use of the energy regardless of what it has transitioned into. The turbo spools quickly enough to eliminate turbo lag and the need for a second turbo.
Hybrid was always part of the equation
Porsche isn’t new to building hybrid cars, starting with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car and then the 918 Spyder hypercar. The 992 was supposed to be a hybrid car from the beginning, but Porsche had trouble figuring out whether to create a PHEV or a performance-based hybrid. It seems the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid is the latter, which seems to be the right choice. This is why the car is part of the 992.2 generation, giving the market an amazing new hybrid machine.
This Porsche has a tiny battery
The new hybrid car has an extremely small battery, which weighs about 60 pounds. The 400-volt, 1.9-kWh battery is about the same size as the old 12-volt battery. This new battery sits between the front shock towers and next to the brake fluid reservoir. The current 12-volt battery runs non-powertrain functions such as the door locks, but the hybrid battery helps add performance to this car. If the GTS were a PHEV, the battery would have added about 500 pounds to the car, which would negatively impact performance.
The digital change
Some people don’t like it when things change. The Porsche 911 has been such an iconic car for so long that some things have remained the same for several generations. This new hybrid model has a 12.6-inch digital screen for the gauges, specifically the tachometer. Some drivers hate this change, but it makes sense for the hybrid model of the 911. There’s an optional clocked tachometer, which allows the redline to sit in the most upright position to ensure you can see where your revs are.
Plenty of Porsche power
The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid has an impressive level of power for your driving pleasure. This hybrid sports car begins with a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat six-cylinder engine that makes 478 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque on its own. Add the hybrid system that adds 53 horsepower and 110 lb-t of torque and you have an amazing powertrain to make driving fun and active in this hybrid sports car. The actual torque is listed at 449 lb-ft because you can’t simply add the torque figures to get the total for any car.
You didn’t need those seats, did you?
Although the battery pack doesn’t add much to the weight of this hybrid sports car, the cables and additional ECU add to the increased weight of this car. To offset this weight gain, Porsche has removed the rear seats from all of the hardtop models. This means the 992.2 Carrera model is actually lighter than the 992.1 version, which is kind of crazy. If you want to add the seats in your hybrid performance car, you can, and it won’t cost you anything, but why would you?
How will you know the hybrid model?
You can identify the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Hybrid by looking at the front, where five active grille shutters per side are present. These shutters are located just below the headlights and offer a distinct appearance for this amazing car. When the flaps are closed, the drag coefficient is 0.29. When these flaps are open, the grilles send cooling air across the front brakes, rear brakes, intercooler, battery, and everything else that needs some cooling.
